Benefits of the Opportunity Card

The Opportunity Card for Germany offers many advantages for international professionals aiming to work in Germany:

• Access to the job market
• Long-term residence: After securing a job in Germany, you have the opportunity to transition to a long-term residence permit and eventually also permanent residence for 12 months.
• Part-time employment: With the Opportunity Card, you can work up to 20 hours per week as you search for full-time employment in your qualified field.
• Trial jobs: You have the chance to take up trial jobs with prospective employers for a maximum of two weeks to see if you are a right fit.

Point system score of 6.

Recognised foreign educational qualification (4 points)

You receive four points, if you have gone through the process of having your foreign qualifications recognised and have achieved partial equivalence. This is still the case even if you need compensatory measures to obtain a license to practice a regulated profession.

Language proficiency (1-4 points)

Points for language skills are awarded according to the following criteria:

• 1 point: if you have German language skills at A2 level
• 2 points: if you have German language skills at B1 level
• 3 points: if you have German language skills at B2 level or higher
• 1 point: if you have English language skills at C1 level or higher

Work experience (2-3 points)

You receive two points, if you have at least two years of relevant work experience in your qualified field from the last five years. If you have at least three years of relevant work experience from the last seven years, you will receive three points.

Age (1-2 points)

You receive two points, if you are under 35 years old. If you are between 35 and 40, you receive one point.

Qualified in a profession with shortage (1 point)

You receive one point, if you are qualified in a profession currently facing a shortage of skilled employees in Germany. Shortage occupations include fields such as healthcare, engineering, IT and other STEM related fields.

Previous stay in Germany (1 point)

You receive one point, if you have stayed in Germany continuously for at least six months in the last five years. Your stay could have been for the purpose of study or employment.

Joint application with spouse (1 point)

If you apply for the Opportunity Card with your partner at the same German embassy or consulate, then one of the applications will be awarded one point.
